A week from today will be a reunion of friends from my hometown who have since transplanted to Utah. The bulk of these friends were all in high school at one point or another together over the years. We once were all in the same LDS ward growing up. When we were in college we'd have reunions like this about once a year. Then life happened and we all moved on.
The thing is, I was notified about this reunion by a former friend who hasn't really spoken to me in 16 years. The last time we saw each other was at our 20th class reunion in my hometown and I was hardly worth a "hello" from her. She was still mad at me, from 10 years previous. Well, that was 6 years ago now and, to be honest, I am really hesitating to want to go next week, because of her. Even if she is the one who "invited" me.
There ARE other friends who I'd like to see and visit with from this friend group--mostly from church growing up. But I'm not sure if wanting to see them trumps NOT wanting to get chewed out again by her. This weighing of wishes is painful work.
Truth be told, my LDS friends in high school--stretching across many graduating years--would be the best kind of reunion. I think I am fairly done with my own high school class reunions, even though I was pretty excited about the first one. They just have all been disappointing. But the LDS friends I had growing up are really the people that influenced me as friends and encouraged me to become better. I care abotu them because we have had so many shared experiences and values and goals.
So, the worry is this: I show up at this reunions of transplants and walk into a confrontation and rehashing of an issue 16 years old. Those who I'd REALLY most like to see don't come for the reunion. And I waste a perfectly good birthday dinner night--yes, it is on my birthday.
Maybe I should adopt Genius Golfer's theory that less is more, when it comes to friends. It saves in the heartache department.

Genius Golfer's Theory
We like to tease Genius Golfer that he only has three friends....in the whole world. He generally agrees, as making and keeping friends is hard work. So when I saw this little funny, I thought of him immediately:
Attitude is everything, friends.
Attitude is everything, friends.

You're Killing Me, Smalls!
It's been 20 years since The Sandlot was originally released. Crazy, right? The anniversary was celebrated by the reunion of the cast (and lots and lots of fans) on the actual Sandlot...right here in Utah this past weekend. The Salt Lake Tribune had a great story about it: HERE
I especially like the Wendy Peffercorn reference. Awesome. You've gotta love Squints...and the whole gang.

"Happy Pioneer Day, Dear"
Yesterday at work, I had a little old lady call to see about getting some new nasal cannulas for her oxygen equipment. I told that we could certainly get that to her and told her a driver would deliver it in a few hours. She was surprised that we could be there that fast. She insisted "it wasn't an emergency" but I told her I had a driver in the area and he should have what she needed on his truck.
"Oh, thank you, dear," she said in her shaky little old lady voice.
I told her she was welcome and to please let us know if there was ever anything else we could help her with. "Ok," she said, then added "Happy Pioneer Day tomorrow."
"That's right," I said. "I had almost forgot."
Then she added, "I'm sure glad I'm not a pioneer. But happy they were."
We chuckled together and then I let her go.
It made me smile....I'm glad I'm not a pioneer too, but glad they were.

Swim Team Getting Cozy
Last Saturday was a swim meet at another pool, so I didn't have to work it. Consequently I saw a lot of my kids, and the other high school aged swimmers on our team.
This is mostly what I saw:
The Boy is the center of the attention here....
But, The Girl is getting attention too, just in the shade.
I had to be really covert to get these shots....The Boy was suspicious.
In all honesty, I think the kids were just keeping each other entertained until it was their turn to swim again. And it was funny to sit in the midst of all this teenage energy. This meet was the final regular season one before the County Finals, the first weekend of August.

Hello. Thanks for Calling. May I Help You?
Officially my title at work is "Customer Service Representative". I'm not exactly sure what that actually means. I answer the phone, take orders from nurses for equipment, answer questions of Medicare patients who need something or do like something else. I file paperwork. I enter data. I sort the days orders and dispatch drivers to deliveries and pick ups. I embroider--if we need a little extra help. I also clean equipment when the pile gets too big. I vacuum the office, I clean the windows, and dust the displays.
A CSR them, it seems to me, is a person who does it all and plugs the holes until a further, more permanent solution can be put into action. Yep. Girl Friday.
I prefer the Katherine Hepburn reference better.

Ode To A Nap
Oh, Sunday Naps, how I love thee....let me count the ways....one hour, two hours, three hours, four hours, five hours!
Five hours yesterday, I napped. It was fantastic. I'm not sure what I was fighting off physically, but I was definitely fighting some emotional and mental exhaustion.
This "working mom" thing is kicking my butt. I am working as hard and as fast as I can, but I still keep slipping behind the eight ball. Laundry, grocery shopping, menu planning, housekeeping, weekend chores, volunteering with the kids' swim team, attending the temple, teaching Primary, and trying to do it all with a smile on my face is killing me.
A Sunday nap is the best refueling system I know. Sadly it only comes once a week, at best.
