Boths Ends of the Spectrum

I have activities on tap today that cover points across the spectrum. This morning I am heading up a morning of indoor soccer for the Young Women in our stake. We have never done this but so many girls have requested it that we thought we could at least try it. I have a couple of "expert" soccer players leading the learning and coaching and will ref the scrimmage game.

Then I am off to photograph the selection of the new 2010 Strawberry Days Rodeo queen. They have an interview portion at our library and then out to the Rodeo ground where these girls will ride for the title. I've never covered this event for Strawberry Days before, so it could be very interesting. The Girl is curious too so she is coming with me.

Finally, we have two nephews--they are brothers--receiving their Eagle Scout award tonight, along with six other boys in their troop. Boy that is a lot of Eagles at one time. But it will be very cool to see. Let's hope the inspiration will rub off on The Boy who should be done with his stuff for an Eagle next year some time.

Speaking of The Boy, at some point this morning he will come home from an overnight cam pout and will have laundry and other stinky things I will take care of, certainly. Then Grandmama is picking him up for a birthday lunch date with her--lunch a little shopping, and they will meet us at the cousins' celebration tonight.

Genius Golfer is, well, golfing. He went out early this morning to get his round of 18 in and will be back in time--or so he says--to help me rototill the garden spot I have started working on in the back yard. Between my scheduled things today I need to run to the garden place and pick up a couple bags of stuff to mix into the ground so tomatoes will grow. I'm planting on Monday--so the first will be done for my tomato babies.

Man, writing this day's events out is making me tired already. I'd better quit planning it and start living it. Happy Weekend, everyone.

Friday Funny

My dad sent this to me in an email and I nearly laughed myself out of the chair when I saw the photo. Thought you might like it to start out your Friday too!

Dear Family and Friends,

Most of you know I went in for a small surgical procedure for a butt lift. I did not have the most pleasant of experiences. I wanted to show you how it turned out. Please, refrain from getting this procedure.

You will regret it!

Much Love,

Hide and Seek and Ewww

This morning I spent an hour and a half at the church building hunting for two little indoor soccer goals but ended up cleaning out 40 years of crud.

I am not exaggerating the 40 years estimation...there was a 2 foot by 3 foot framed poster with a Mutual theme for the MIA in 1969! Schnikes, Batman. Throw anything away, much?!

I did--I tossed two full sized garbage bags worth of trash, a quart sized baggie full of dirt, dust and swept up crud, and three pounds of lost and found clothing from basketball jersey to snow gloves and toys.

I reorganized and cleaned up the new volleyball equipment as well. This stuff must be quite pricey and yet people toss it into the cupboard all higglty-piggulty. I organized three new nets and 6 volleyball poles along with referee stands and a variety of padding for the poles and stands. Crazy.

The best find of the day however, was what I went looking for in the first place. I found two PVC goal stands and one soccer net along with oodles of Velcro attaching pieces to connect the net to the PVC frames. That is good, as we have an indoor soccer day planned for Saturday with the Young Women in the stake.

I hope Saturday's activity goes a little smoother than the hunt for the equipment! I'll keep you posted.

Cinco de Mayo y Espanol

The Girl is taking Spanish 2 this year at school. She is registered to take what is essentially Spanish 3 in the fall, but it will also count toward her beginning Spanish for college--it is a concurrent enrollment class.

Thinking about making tacos for dinner today, as that is as much fiesta as I will plan, it made me smile recalling the random Spanish she has been throwing at us in her daily conversation.

For example, one day last week she was tell The Boy that his camisa (shirt) was dirty. Or at the dinner table she will ask for the leche, por favor (milk, please).

It cracks me up especially since I have been doing the same thing to the kids since they were small--only I give them commands in Spanish, so far as I can remember it from college. Escuchame (listen to me), or Vienen Aqui (come here), or Callate (be quiet). And, like Pavlov's dogs, they respond appropriately.

When she throws some random Spanish at us, it just shows me she is thinking in Spanish occasionally, which is great for her learning the language. I just hope she can retain more of it than I have. I wish I had someone to practice with more. The Girl is pretty good at that, but she has much more vocabulary in her head than I have remembered. I have to send her to look things up when she asks what the word for ___ is. Maybe I should take my own advice.

I have tried to teach her the little song Mr. Bryant taught us in my HS Spanish classes. He used it when someone was spacing out and not paying attention. "Where are you? Who are you thinking about?" It is half sing-songy and half lullaby. But it is catchy and still, 20 some years later, I remember it.

So, Felicitades y Bueno Cinco de Mayo, mis amigos.

Video Bonus Round

Remember the cute gal that did the William Tell Overture parody about all the things moms say? She is at it again , and I can't wait until Sunday to share this little video from her. I could blame the weather for my sympathetic feelings about this song, but then it will be golf season and the feelings will be the same. Enjoy!

Intruder Alert

Saturday night I had the rare opportunity to crash the prom. Better yet, I got to crash the prom with a friend. Even better than that, this friend, with whom I crashed the prom, is a fantastic teacher at the HS and her students love her--and really, she was like a Rock Star at the prom!

I was very interested, in this covert operation, to get a look at my Trek kids, primarily, but also to compare and contrast the Prom today versus the Prom back in the day. You know, when I went. When the Flintstones were modern.

Well, some things were universally acknowledged truth, still. Some girls just choose hoochie mama dresses, with their bazooms just hanging out there for all to see, and more than likely their moms had no idea. The manicured fingertips regularly clutching and pulling at the top edges of strapless or tiny spaghetti strapped dress bodices to keep the bazooms covered. OK, still the same.

There are still those prom dates who, while slow dancing, can't keep themselves for going for the bum-grab, or backside grope as the case may be. Check, still the same.

And there is still the unnatural phenomenon of boys trying to out dress their prom dates by choosing pimp-daddy hats, or selecting a tux with tails, a cane and top hat, or, as I saw in one case in particular, trying to channel Saturday Night Fever's John Travolta with the white suit and dark dress shirt. Talk about a flashback.

But I am happy to report some things have changed. There were so many beautifully dressed young women--my own YW and Trek girls and other YW I know from school and church included here--who wore lovely, modest dresses that allowed them to just dance, and mingle and have fun without worrying that their bazooms were continually in a precarious state of near-falling out of the dress. Their confidance was radiant as they were at ease and comfortable with what they were wearing.

Also new to me, was the sight of young men, impressed with their impeccably and modestly dressed prom dates, who could also just dance and have fun and enjoy the company of friends in groups without constantly trying to avert their eyes from the said falling bazooms. These darling boys were having a great time and consequently, their dates were too. What a concept--no uncomfortable situations!

But my favorite improvement at the Prom in the last couple of decades was that so many of my young friends who, when they saw me there--completely out of context--went out of their way to come over and talk to us and say hello and were not embarrassed to recognize that their Young Women or Trek leaders were there and how sincerely happy they seemed to see us. Here I mean specifically my trek kids: Professor, Bronze, Snow White and NSG(Non-Stop Gangsta). If they weren't really, they faked it well enough to make me thrilled!

I love these kids--any place and any time I see them!

Video Sunday

I will have another post this week about the Prom, as our high school's was last night and I got to go as a chaperone for a while with a friend who teaches there. But this video was just creative. And the thought makes my jaw hurt a bit.
