Biting Off More Than We Can Chew

Today is the post-paint, pre-carpet, mid-electronics trouble work day for our house project. Genius Golfer is figuring out how and where to put the speakers that he insists we must have to compliment our too-big-in-my-opinion television in the family room. To do this, we needed to pull the books and scrapbooks that were loaded very recently into the new entertainment bookshelves GG made for me last year. His plan is to run the wires for all these speakers behind the shelving and make them less visible. All that sounds good.

Piles of stuff in the office, waiting.

He also decided we need to replace the carpet: "If we are going to re-do it, we're going to re-do it all right." That meant that we unloaded the pair of blue sofas to Dear Friend Sherry for her unfinished basement--and wintertime playroom. (Thanks, Sherry!!) So the carpet will be pulled up from the family room, and from under the recently installed and loaded with books--but now unloaded of everything--shelving. The new carpet is coming and will be installed on Wednesday.

Bags of books...waiting.

With no couches, no front room furniture until the stuff comes we ordered (should be here the first week of September) I think I can safely say we most likely won't have Home Teachers popping over anytime this month--there is no where to sit with them. Just the kitchen table and chairs...and that is comfortable enough for eating, but not for HT visits.

Piles of scrapbooks, too many really, all...waiting.

So GG has his work cut out for him today. Lucky for me he has hardly asked me to lift a finger--and I prefer to see that as a deference to my femininity than a critique on my usefulness and helpfulness. So let's leave it at that.

Spots not quite ready for all the stuff...waiting.

In the meantime, I live among pile of books, scrapbooks, wall hangings, framed art and photos, and boxes of stuff waiting to be put away again--as soon as GG tell me he is ready for it.

Friday the 13th?

I got a call last night from one of our high councilmen inviting me to speak with him on Sunday in another ward. "Great," I told him. "What is our assigned subject?"

He says it is from Elder Holland's talk from General Conference in April. "Oh," I told him. "The one on LUST?" That is the one, he confirms. Dangit.

Perhaps, this is a pre-emptive Friday the 13th kind of curse? Or, it is a Friday the 13th kind of thing that today is basically my only day to prepare something.

One of the Seven Deadly Sins, a topic that must be spoken of boldly and without mincing words. Sure, I can do this. Right? Anyone have a Magic 8 Ball to confer with today?

My Two Book Deal

Today the FedEx man brought me the second volume of my blog book. I have a two book deal! Of course, as it is self-published no one but myself is paying for the publication of my book. Dangit. But, it is my journal in a sense, so no need to publish it for the world to read either, I suppose.

But it still very cool to see my stuff I have written on paper with a binding and a cover and a dust jacket even! No matter how fun the blog is, it just feels more real when it is a hardback, paper copy, in my hand, flip the pages, kind of book. Good times.

Let it Begin, Already!

I am more than ready for PTA to begin. But I guess, that would mean school would have to start too. Dangit. I am not ready for that.

This has been a nice summer for lounging, being busy, having fun, and hanging out with my kids. It has also been a long summer of PTA drama, high and low, that I am totally ready to be done with. Sadly, my PTA life is one more year from being over--at least in a managerial position. I am more than happy to go back to being a worker bee.

As a Council president, I am the first line of defense, training, question answering, and hand-holding. This time last year, there was more soothing ofnerves, and building up of confidences. This year, I have more preventative maintenance to do to get these local schools on track for a positive, and non-legal threatening years.

It is almost enough to make me want to get a job, just to avoid this stuff. But I don't have time for a real job. I am too busy doing PTA junk. Back to school sounds like the only solution.

Post Op Surprises

The Girl's oral surgery went well yesterday. In fact, once I left hte room, pre-sedation, the doctor was out to tell me things went great in about 40 minutes. It was another hour almost before I got her to the car and we headed home. But that hour was one of the funniest I can remember.

I know that anesthesia does different things to different people. I knew that, but still didn't expect the hilarity of yesterday's post-operative recovery.

The Girl was so stoned. And I mean that in the very best sense of the word. She was watching her hand as she flopped it on and off her lap. She would hold her head up only long enough to turn it and flop it back over to the other side--real hurky-jerky. And she couldn't stop smiling. Considering her had a mouth full of gauze squares folded up to stop the bleeding, the smiling was pretty amazing.

She couldn't stop giggling though. That was funny. I still don't know what her drug-addled brain was thinking about but it must have been funny.

After a drop off of prescriptions--may I add, that drive up pharmacy windows are the best thing I have seen developed in a LONG time?!--we got her into the house. Luckily for me, and her, Genius Golfer had taken a personal day from work to paint the house yesterday otherwise I am not sure she would have made it into the house at all. She is getting taller and heavier and I am getting older and weaker, apparently. GG had to almost lift her up the stairs to get her to bed. She was wobbly and staggering like an old wino.

As she got settled into the recovery bed--mine, since it has a DVD and TV to hold her attention--she tried to ask me a question. Still having a mouth full of gauze, she motioned for a paper and pencil. I found those and gave them to her. Then she wrote a message about calling the neighbors to borrow a movie IN SPANISH. Hilarious.

Later in the day her BFF, Nicole, came over and babysat her/watched movies with her/kept her from falling off the bed. Slowly but surely she came out of the anesthesia fully and then we spent the rest of the day dealing with pudding, pain meds, and ice packs.

Still, her reaction to the anesthesia was so unexpected, I am still smiling about it when I think of her face yesterday. GG got some of that on video. And if I figure out how to load it, we'll post something here. I just hope she doesn't ever have friends who need to be entertained so badly that they give her drugs. She'd fill the entertainment request, but who knows what else she'd do!

Extraction

Today The Girl is having her wisdom teeth extracted. She seems very calm about the whole thing. That is good, because I am freaking out just a little on the inside.

I had my wisdom teeth pulled too, but I was a little older that The Girl. I was in my junior year of high school and I had all four impacted teeth pulled over Thanksgiving break. What a rotten time to do that to someone. I laid around on the couch all weekend slurping Jell-O while I could smell my mom's turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, pies, and stuffing. RUDE!

As I recall the extraction process itself went well, but the complications I encountered were of the post-op sort. I ended up with lock jaw. I can't recall anything more uncomfortable until childbirth. But, may I say, the drug used to treat the lock jaw was FANTASTIC!

I remember being given Valium. What a wonderful drug. So soothing, so peaceful. So calm, and unlocking.

Maybe with my history from wisdom teeth extraction, I could have the doctor give me some more of that, then I'd be so much more pleasant to deal with while I nurse The Girl back to health from her surgery. Yeah, that would be great.

Video Sunday

Who knew Tom Cruise knew ANYthing about Home Teaching??!
