I have a photo of me reading my book while sitting on the potty at about this age. (No you won't be seeing it here.) I have photos of The Girl, several actually, of her sitting on the potty reading as well. The Boy might have one of two photos of him reading while sitting on the potty, but his were all staged with the books. But had this been an option for him, I might have been a bit faster in getting hi to use the potty regularly. For all I know this little girl was updating her Facebook status, or Tweeting whether she was "one-ing it or two-ing it". (Any Bill Cosby fans out there? Can I get an 'Amen'?)

Really?!
Our state legislature wrapped up their annual session last night. And I have had a couple of heartburn inducing bills that I have tried to keep on my radar while they worked. Now the legislature's part if over and the Governor is holding the bag at this point with bills waiting to be signed into law.
I just want to share my complete disappointment about one bill. Overwhelmingly, legislators in both houses passed a bill shifting our public education's handling of Sex Ed in health or biology to an "abstinence only" curriculum. This bill is now sitting on the governor's desk waiting for a signature or a veto.
The thing is, while abstinence is the option I personally would prefer for our kids for their sexual behavior, this bill disallows any parental choice to "opt in" or the choice to give permission for our kids to learn from an educated and caring teacher (as it is now). A student requires a permission slip to sit in a class period to hear any of this information--which is currently even more limited than I would prefer--at this point. This new bill removes that opt in or permission slip choice. The proposed change would not let teachers answer ANY question from a student that went outside the abstinence-only language.
Where will kids go for information then? You know they won't just stop looking for what they feel they need to know. The Internet? Their friends? Yeah, sure. I worry about that. A lot.
I believe strongly that, as a parent, it is my duty and privilege to teach my kids the values and morals I believe as right. I feel bound to teach them how to stay safe, physically and emotionally, when it comes to human sexuality along with everything else I do to try to keep them safe. Having a teacher back up my efforts to instruct my kids with just the facts, is a great way to tie the medical information to the morality I want to instill in them on this topic. Now the government thinks they know better what to do for my kids. That is wrong. In every way.
Here is a LINK in a local newspaper from one of the opposing representative, who presents a thoughtful and caring opinion. I agree with her. How I wish other elected officials thought more about the "we the people" they represent than their own re-electability or the extremists who puff them up throughout the session as lobbyists.
My faith in the system significantly dims between this kind of extremist agenda-driven legislation and the vicious, attacking, slanderous primary election propaganda going on in our country. And that is disturbing to me. America was designed for better than this.

A Useful Waste of Time
I think I have written about my newest online hobby--Pinterest. It is hugely entertaining, and much less messy than if I actually clipped these things and pinned them on my bulletin board. I also realize that I can spend unhealthy amounts of time getting nothing done when I am sitting there enjoying myself. But recently I have found great success, along with an easy way to blow and hour or two.
Last night I made "new recipe #3" from a Pinterest pin. It was Cheesy-Veggie Chowder. Oh man. It was good. too bad The Boy doesn't care for broccoli, other wise it would have been perfect. Lucky for me I have lovely friend who are happy (or at least, they are to my face) to receive portions from the crock pot.
Today I rubbed out the scratches on my white stoneware bowls I have had since college. (And I wonder why they are looking 20+ years old?!) Another Pinterest tip. They look brand new! I love that!
And tonight, I currently have, in the oven, as I type, a Chicken Cordon Bleu casserole. "New Recipe #4" from Pinterest. I'll let you know the family's verdict on this one, but it looks yummy too.
This month I set a goal for myself to try two new recipes each week, and introduce an otherwise unloved vegetable to my family. Last week was asparagus, Disneyland's Loaded-Potato Soup ("new recipe #2") and Baked Fan Potatoes ("new recipe #1"). In my eyes, when the family likes them, that make 'em all good things to add to my cooking repertoire--but I will watch recipes I get on Pinterest better. The fan potatoes was originally posted in Europe....and I didn't notice the oven temp was given in Celsius. But that is a minor blip on my new personal cooking challenge.

Rewind to 1984
The Girl seems to think that I don't remember what it is like to be in high school, and all the "dumb" stuff that happens there. So I broke out the journals and today I'd like to share something that happened this week in 1984. I would have been The Boy's age--a freshman in high school. If my teen aged children keep up this argument this may become a weekly blog post. Just warning you.
So I did make dumb mistakes...and had the same kind of issues The Girl seems to think are hers along and that no one will EVER understand. Too bad, so sad. Being a teenager just stinks. Always has, always will.

The Young Author's conference went pretty well. Ginger and Melanie both said we did well. The volleyball team played again today. I made about 5 points total. Tonight's party started at 7:30 but Richelle, Wanda and I didn't come until about 8:15 because we went to see "Footloose" again. Richelle hadn't seen it before. (I think it;'s better the first time.) The party was alright though. Scott didn't come and neither did Jim. Bart was there though. Last night when we went shopping I left my retainer at Carl's Jr in Salinas. We have to wait until Monday to call Dr. Hawke. I can't wait. He's gonna give me the third degree. I'm gonna give mom the privilege of calling him. My mouth feels lonely without it. That's it. All for now.So I did make dumb mistakes...and had the same kind of issues The Girl seems to think are hers along and that no one will EVER understand. Too bad, so sad. Being a teenager just stinks. ♫ I'm Gonna Soak Up the Sun ♫
Today is fore-casted to be spring. Tomorrow is fore-casted to be winter again. Welcome to Utah. Like they say, "If you don't like the weather, wait for 24 hours or so and you'll be pleasantly surprised".
After getting some sense of winter's wrath last week--we have about two and half days of snow and cold--seeing as that is about the most of winter we have seen, today is supposed to be almost 60 degrees. Ahhh. That kind of weather surprise is my favorite. And it makes the next snowy forecast bearable.
Luckily for me, my tulips are quite up yet, but their little stems are poking up and sooner than later I'll have flowers to enjoy. I'm hoping the snow is long gone by then.
