Echoes of the Past

Yesterday I filled in at our high school Viking Store for the regular "Thursday gal" who (deservedly so) is on a cruise.  It was a slow day and I was by myself.  But I was thoroughly entertained by the wafting of music from the student commons area of a band playing old 80s favorites.

At first I didn't realize what they were playing...as the hallway where the store is located is a bit out of the way.  But there is no way to disguise "867-5309....Jenny, Jenny, who can I turn to?"  Or the "Axel F" theme from Beverly Hills Cop, or the Modern English classic "I'd Melt With You".

Why, you may ask, are the 2013 students of PGHS playing/listening to such pop culture classics?  It is all about the student council's dance this weekend.  They are hosting a "Save Ferris" dance.  It is a boy's choice, date-dance, but it is a casual affair encompassing an 80s theme, including the invitation to "dress the part".  You know, from the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off.  It is also a fundraiser for cancer research.  All the money they make form the dance, the Save Ferris t-shirt they have sold, and the collecting tins around the campus will be presented to the Jon Huntsman Center for Cancer Research in Salt Lake.

Pretty cool kids, really.  But our 80s tunes are still the best.  Even the cool kids of today know it.
