Live from New York...

Last night was this season's premiere of Saturday Night Live, NBC's sketch comedy show that plays (almost) live before a studio audience. Micheal Phelps was hosting. So I taped it.

Once upon a time I L -O-V-E-D this show. On Saturday nights, before leaving for a stake dance, I would double check our dinosaur VCR and see that indeed the timer was set and the tape was in place. Then on Sunday afternoon I would laugh until my cheeks hurt at the craziness that Billy Chrystal, Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, Jane Curtain, Dan Akroyd, John Belushi and Eddie Murphy (among others) could come up with each week. And my favorite part was anytime they could crack each other up. I loved watching them try to stay in character as they finished the scene.

Maybe it is like the warm spot in my heart for the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Somehow it is always funnier in the middle of the night--SNL is on late at night--and when you are fourteen years old.

I realized from watching last night's SNL episode that I am too old to watch this show. Even with the hilarious Palin/Clinton skit in the opening minutes and Micheal Phelps making fun of himself and apparently having a great time with the cast, it is still a show for the young and stupid. I guess that makes me old and cranky.

Perhaps the ultimate realization I had after watching the DVR's version of SNL is there is 15-20 minutes of sketch comedy and 60-75 minutes of commercials each week. I am too old to waste my time watching the commercials. Oh well. They don't make the "Not Ready for Prime Time Players" like they used to anyways.

SNL was the air that my friends and I breathed through HS and college! The best years were with Eddie and Dan and Steve. We stopped watching when it turned nasty and dirty.

Ok so I rarely watch SNL any more but I remember the nights of staying up late and laughing to no end. I did see the Palin/Clinton skit though and laughed pretty hard!

I have to say, I made the realization that I had outgrown the show years ago. It sure used to seem funnier. LOVED it!
