The Hills Are Alive

Yesterday, my favorite gadget, my fabulous DVR, captured an Oprah episode that I was more than happy to watch.  It was a reunion of The Sound Of Music cast, 45 years after the film released.  These guys hadn't been together for an interview since then...four and a half decades ago.

I love Julie Andrews.  I love her voice, I love her sass, I love her accent.  I loved that the "kids" all remarked that they thought she was so kind and sweet and fun.  Just what I think of her.  It made me happy to know that what I have always believed about her is true.

The kids talked about her teaching them the song "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious".  They thought she was brilliant and even more talented then previously believed--as Mary Poppins hadn't yet been released so they didn't know it was from that movie.  Ha ha.  I guess that would make you think she was a genius, to be sure.

As I watched this made-for-TV reunion I thought about how much I love this film.  I appreciate it being one of the things I remember from childhood.  It was one of the movies I remember watching at Christmastime at my house.  Which is really saying something, as we only got two channels.  I remember singing the music to the tape with my family, at least once every family road trip--between all the Mac Davis and Neil Diamond.

As a girl, I loved the thought of growing up as pretty as Leisel, and being as cute as little Gretel. Wishful thinking, but hopeful too.   And I loved the suppressed family qualities that Maria brought out in the Captain, and how she could make that family happy together again.  Plus, I would have loved to play the guitar like she did--especially at girls' camp.

The Sound of Music is a wholesome, family centric, stand up for what you believe, faith-filled kind of movie.  What is not to love about that?!  They sure don't make them like that anymore.  I think of the life lessons taught in that film, and it warms my heart to think it is still so beloved by people everywhere.  It is a classic for good reason.

Makes me want to watch it all again.  ♫ "How do you solve a problem like Maria?"  ♫

Well shoot. I missed it. And I don't DVR the O. Ah well. I too have fond memories of this great movie. And Julie Andrews is amazing.
