Mining Hidden Talent

Yesterday The Girl had a bit of a bake-off. Her Secret Sister from girl's camp received a set of coupons for three different baking projects for her gift one day. Yesterday was the day set to fulfill the promised baking.

Sister M is The Girl's Young women leader, and was her SS at camp. She was planning a little "Celebrate Kindergarten" party for her daughter, Becca. Becca is also our next door neighbor. She is five and her first day of school is tomorrow. Her grandparents are coming over tonight to celebrate this milestone with her and her mom wanted to cash in her cake coupon for that.

Sister M brought The Girl a cake mix and a tub of frosting. The Girl did the rest. She studied a cool cake shape cook book that another friend had given her for a birthday gift a few years ago. I was watching the recorded Olympics I hadn't gotten to yet while she was doing this and only was called for in an advisory role.

She chose the butterfly and even bought the gumdrops and other confections that she used for trimmings. She did a really great job and Sister M was sincerely surprised. Sister M told me that she expected a rectangular or circle shaped cake--not a huge pink butterfly! What five year old girl wouldn't LOVE a huge pink butterfly cake?!

The Girl's achievement in baking here is all the more astounding when you think of the foundational training she hasn't received in this arena from me. Remember my praises for the butter cream treats from Macey's? Perhaps her Grandma Eileen gave her some cake decorating genes. Grandma Eileen does wedding cakes like this one she created for Travis and Lacey:

Maybe this kind of talent The Girl is discovering skips a generation?! Either way, I couldn't be more proud. She did a great job and I'm sure Becca will have a better time at Kindergarten for it.
